Mondays at Lafayette’s

Every Monday in February and April, please join me at Lafayette’s Music Room with my band and a special guest every week, 6-9, no cover. We’ll be recording all the shows as well. Let’s make Mondays a thing, Memphis.

Made in Memphis on Beale Street Caravan

Look, Mom. I’m talking about records on public radio every week now, thanks to NPR Worldwide’s Beale Street Caravan?. I get to pick the track and do some research and write the script. In this first one I got to record my buddy Lawrence Boo Mitchell talking about the making of Mark Ronson’s #1 hit Uptown Funk. It’s only 7 minutes long and we’re doing 9 more of them this season, and all of them songs you know but probably didn’t know were recorded in Memphis. My segment starts around the 25 minute mark. This is fun!

Americana Fest 2015

rowan oakI’m very excited to be appearing Friday, September 18 at Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville as a part of the Americana Music Association’s annual Americana Fest. This is a cool bill and a one-of-a-kind venue. My set is at 10 PM but you should come and check out all the acts.

In other news, I’m thrilled to be backing up my dear friend Kelly Hogan Saturday, September 19 at William Faulkner’s Rowan Oak estate in Oxford, MS. She’s put a makeshift band together with myself, the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray, and Jon Langford of The Mekons and Waco Brothers. I’m very excited to meet these artists and play music with them.

Lastly, all of us in Motel Mirrors would like to thank you guys for your help with our Indie Go Go campaign to finance our upcoming album. The record couldn’t have gotten made without you guys, and we are very grateful. Thanks again, and we can’t wait for you to hear it in 2016. World boogie is coming.

The new Motel Mirrors LP needs your help

Most of you know about my band with Amy LaVere, Motel Mirrors. You may not know that some time ago, Amy married Austin guitarist, singer, and songwriter Will Sexton, and now he’s in the band too, thankfully. So what started out as a side-project for Amy and I to sing duets has blossomed into a new band with three singers and writers all collaborating and contributing. (The guitar playing is pretty fun, too).

We booked a week at Scott Bomar’s Electraphonic Recording and about a week beforehand sat down in Amy and Will’s kitchen and wrote a record (they cooked, too). We need your help to finish it. We’re using 8-track 1″ tape with no computer, the way great records used to be made. It’s been an exciting process and we all think we have something special and that you’re going to love this record. But we need your help to pay for it. Please check out our Indie Go Go campaign and think about supporting us if you can.
